How counselling can help us?

Counselling assists people in developing their own sense of self-awareness of their emotional state and of their choices in life , so that they can recognise when their choices might need reassessing as they are no longer meeting their needs in a healthy way. This new awareness can be a daunting or emotional experience, and counselling provides a safe and supported space to explore and express thoughts, feelings and emotions. Clients who develop their awareness of self can better protect their personal boundaries, their resources and their limitations. They become less vulnerable, more autonomous and self-empowered.

Working with a counsellor can assist clients to learn how to separate the past from the present on an emotional level, so that emotional responses to their environment are based on their present needs rather than on past needs, or reactive behaviours. Clients who address their present needs will find their lives much more fulfilling, and will be empowered to see inconsistencies and make changes in their lives where needed. When this occurs the client will notice their own motives behind their emotions and behaviours more, and they will have greater understanding of what drives and motivates them in their lives.

Counselling requires work from both parties, where active discussion and exploration are necessary to bring about change. Both counsellor and client discuss potential ways of achieving more positive outcomes for the issues in their lives that have brought them to the counselling session. Client confidentiality is guaranteed throughout all sessions of the counselling journey.
